Kamakhya Temple is deeply
associated with tantric traditions
whose rituals often involve
symbolism tied to life, death, and
rebirth. Historically, animal
sacrifices were a part oftantric rites
meantto appease the goddess
Kamakhya. Buffaloes, bulls, goats,
and pigeons were sacrificed,
especially during Durga Puja and
Ambubachi Mela. The belief was that
offering blood symbolized life force
and pleased the goddess. A law was
passed to ban the sacrifice oflarge
animals like bulls, but sacrifice of
goats, etc. continue.
